The Wonderful Means of Surmounting Obstacles

Background and Summary(Short Story)

In a letter addressed to Shijō Kingo, the Daishonin suggests that the theoretical teaching of the Lotus Sutra falls short in revealing the eternal nature of Buddhahood and lacks the power to overcome life’s obstacles. The essential teaching surpasses these limitations but is still insufficient for people of the Latter Day of the Law. Only the chant “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo” holds the potential to guide them to Buddhahood.
