The Bow and Arrow

Background and Summary(Short Story)

Nichiren Daishonin wrote a letter to Toki, a lay nun, in 1276. Toki’s husbad’s mother passed away, and Toki’s husband carried her ashes to Minobu for a memorial service. The letter shows Toki’s support for her husband and her diligence in faith. Daishonin expresses concern for Toki’s illness, possibly caused by caring for her mother-in-law. He encourages her and prays for her well-being. Toki’s death year is uncertain, but one source suggests she recovered and lived for many more years.

It is the power of the bow that determines the flight of the arrow, the might of the dragon that controls the movement of the clouds, and the strength of the wife that guides the actions of her husband. In the same way, it is your support that has enabled Toki to visit me here now.
