A Warning against Begrudging One’s Fief

Background and Summary(Short Story)

The letter was written by Nichiren Daishonin to Shijō Kingo, who faced false accusations after a religious debate. Lord Ema threatened Kingo’s fief and ordered him to forsake his faith. Kingo sought Daishonin’s support, who encouraged him and defended him to Lord Ema. Eventually, Lord Ema fell ill and turned to Kingo for help, leading to renewed trust and a larger estate for Kingo. The letter emphasizes the importance of maintaining faith in the Lotus Sutra, regardless of one’s social position or adversity faced.
