Nichiren Daishonin wrote a letter to Toki Jōnin in 1275. He defines a sage as one who understands past, present, and future, and claims to be the foremost sage in the world based on his accurate predictions of rebellion and foreign invasion.

My disciples, you should believe what I say and watch what happens. These things do not occur because I myself am respectworthy, but because the power of the Lotus Sutra is supreme.
