On Consecrating an Image of ShakyamuniBuddha Made by Shijō Kingo

Background and Summary(Short Story)

Nichiren Daishonin wrote a letter to Shijō Kingo in 1276, discussing the consecration of a Buddha image and Shijō Kingo’s worship of the sun deity. The Daishonin emphasizes that using the Lotus Sutra in the eye-opening ceremony is essential for the image to possess the Buddha’s qualities. Despite the prevalent practice of revering Amida Buddha, the Daishonin allows making images of Shakyamuni as a step towards correct understanding. He also explains that the power of the sun deity stems from the Buddhist Law taught in the Lotus Sutra. The Daishonin commends Shijō Kingo’s devotion and acknowledges Lord Ema’s support. He cautions Shijō Kingo to remain vigilant due to the danger posed by his fellow samurai.
